The United States and the Soviet Union met along the Elbe River April 25, 1945. This joining helped to end the war because they cut Germany in two. After the capture of Leipzig, the American troops began planning on meeting up with the Soviet Union Troops.  The American troops sent out in advance to the main troops, small forces to locate the Soviet troops. Some of these forces were the 35-man patrol of the 3rd Battalion, 273rd Infantry, and the 69th Infantry Division.           On April 26th through the 27th, senior commanders of both armies met in the town of Torgau.  The armies shared their food with each other, exchanging sardines, biscuits, and spam.  The two armies together would end World War II. This union represented the huge amount of effort that all of the allies put into the war to achieve victory for a peaceful world.
